In 8 years of attending the Fest, I have never had nicer weather than today. You can count on some sort of weather issue when coming to the Fest -- too hot, too humid, rain, or, if you're lucky, all of the above. You get used to dealing. Today was about 70 degrees with a light breeze. Less than 50% humidity, which for the swamp is extremely dry. Brilliant sun with only light wispy clouds. Amazing.
We got to the Fest early today, around 12:45 p.m. We had nothing else to do. And I couldn't take another "when are we going to Jazzfest" or "when are we going to see Trey" from Myles. So we hopped into the limo (also known as the Avis minivan) and headed to Cedric's house to park.
Myles liked the music all three days. But he liked the food a lot better. Not the New Orleans food, mind you, but the popcorn, chicken fingers, lemonade, ice cream and raisins -- all food I could have easily given him at home. At first I found it a little disappointing that Myles liked the food more than the music. I then realized that it's not the music that I love either. Don't get me wrong, I like the music a ton. But I can sit in my house and listen to the same music. I love the food (more than 70 of New Orleans' finest establishments), the atmosphere, the people you meet, and most importantly, the experience of spending the day kicking back and relaxing (yes, Myles and relaxation are not always mutually exclusive!).
The higlight of today's music line-up, as you can imagine, was Trey Anastasi and his band. (Myles asked for Paige, Mike and Jon, the other members of Phish. I told him just Trey was performing. Trey didn't help the matter by playing a Phish song Myles knows pretty well, 46 Days. Here I was telling him this wasn't Phish and Trey pulled out a Phish song. Incidentally, I saw the band play this same song during the band's first appearance after its hiatus on SNL in Dec. 2002.
Enjoy these pictures from today. You also may be wondering ... did Myles dance? Here's some video to prove it (click to download sunday_at_the_fest021.avi). He stuck to the basics -- the spin dance. But every now and then he did funk it out with his kick dance and his arm dance.
Myles is asleep. I'm about the go to sleep as well. Long day in the sun and we have a 6:45 a.m. flight back to DC tomorrow.
